Careers
                                                Agriculture

Unlike the popular and faulty perception, agriculturist is not a glorified term
for the humble farmer. Although humble farmers are the primary agriculturists
of our country, there are other kinds of agriculturists. For them, agriculture is
not a  generation-to-generation, hand-me-down, no-other-choice career,
but a viable, just-like-any-other career option.
An entry into this rather unusual career can be gained at the graduation
level, with many universities in the country offering courses in agriculture
and related sciences. What you can learn out in the fields can  perhaps
never  be taught inside a classroom, but formal training is necessary for you
to get the formal know-how.

The Prospects
Agri-business firms employ people  who have combined education in
agricultural science, economics and business  administration. College
teaching/agricultural extension service offer opportunities to post graduates i
n agriculture.

Government    agencies,   state   departments  of   agriculture, banks
and  various trade organisation hire  agricultural  employees.  State
departments supervise the increase in crop production and seed upgradation.

Jobs are also available in the departments of animal husbandry and
fisheries in the states. For forestry, every state has  a separate department.
The "Green Revolution" has ushered in numerous job opportunities for agricultural
